Canon EOS 450D - Is It Worth the Upgrade?

by Andy C Knight

Due the requirement for live view Manual focusing on a Telescope I ended up purchasing both cameras. From the testing that I have done (Ignoring the **tiny** difference in megapixels - With my lenses, it needs to be primes carefully used to really show off this difference), both cameras deliver more or less the same image quality with a given lens.

Apart from some focusing issues that I had with the kit lens, I have found that the 450D IS lens delivers sharper images when the focus is nailed. Also note that the issues I had with erratic focus 'went away'! (Still convinced that something was tight inside the lens when new!)

The 450D has a few 'extra tricks' up its sleeve though and those that I find important for general photography are...

1. Larger LCD - it's not just bigger but the viewing angle is MUCH better.

2. Live view does come in handy...(for example if you are shooting above the heads of a crowd, the live view function really helps and with the better viewing angle in #1 above - you can just about see what you are doing!)

What it does is allow you to preview the image on the LCD BEFORE you take the shot. (with 1x 5x or 10x zoom and the ability to roam around the live image)

It can really speed things up (like manual focus), because with the 400D you have to take a picture - check it out - make some changes - take another shot etc....

Also if you are in a really tight spot (e.g. the corner of a room to get maximum coverage) where ones head won't fit - you can see what the camera is looking at by plugging it in a TV monitor.

3. Highlight Priority mode is a handy tool, to help stop the sky washing out when you are photographing JPEG's in the shadows.

4. It is much faster when scrolling through pictures in review mode. Sounds silly but this can really help when deleting unwanted shots etc...

The only negative that I found with the 450D, is that it's continuous burst mode of RAW and RAW+JPEG is a little more limited in numbers, than the 400D, due to the larger image size and faster burst rate. For JPEG only output - it takes so many shots this is not a problem.

However I won't be selling my 400D - as it's a very good and capable camera - for it's 2nd hand value, I would rather have a second body and prevent a lot of lens swapping!

So in my mind, it's all down to available funds. - If you can afford the 450D, I would suggest that you go for it. There is nothing worse than realising at a later date, that you should have brought the better camera.
