For me photography came about by accident. At School I was a huge fan of History of Art and Art, and that was about as much interest school held for me.
It was apparent at an early age I lacked any talent in the Art front.So as I got older and the exams came, I was left with the choice of Latin or Physics. And it was that which caused me to beg for any altnative. So a day release course was set up for me in Photography.
So the love affair began, I will add that I got my camera did 5 lessons and spent the rest of the time skipping school. Yet I did love Photography.It was then I could become an "Artist".
However in my family there already was a Photographer, and a good one at that who was the Photographer for the Gaurdian Newspaper, until all newspapers in Britain changed the way Images were obtained.Sp from my first film my images were picked on and hated, the support lacked in a huge way. My confidence in pieces and enjoyment destroyed I stopped photographing and took up the hospitality trade, for 9 yrs.
It was after 9yrs of 90 hr weeks that caused me to walk away from it. It was during this break that I spent long hours trying to decide which way my life would go next, that I picked up the camera again. My love for Photography never left.
A good friend said to me "why not make it your life", so with confidence low and full of fear I embarked on changing my life, which began a few months ago.
Maybe with fear, I have been very nervous about putting my images out there. Then one night with a few drinks I put some in for online sites. The feed back was helpful and my confidence started to return.
As far as my business goes, it has been slow and I am clueless about how to go about promoting and marketing myself. I still get much grief and critism from family, as I am pretty much self taught.Which has caused problems, but it's this which has fuelled me more.
Many doors for me have been shut in respect with family connections, so its "who you know" does not work for me, well not here in Britain.Its been hard , yet it's something I am always learning from.
All my work is digital now as this has worked out cheaper, the pennies have almost dried up and the future looks tough and bleak right now. Yet the Ray of Sunshine for me is the joy of taking images and the sense of feeling I get when someone loves an image. It beat 90 hr week anytime, and that the grief and conflict are worth it all in the end.
The poorest I have been, the uncertainess of it all, and going it alone still holds a fear. But you know what I wouldn't swop it for anything.What helps me is that sites like this and many others offer feedback for the less gifted like myself to improve and offer inspiration to get better.
I always had a motto in life of "Love many, Trust few, but always paddle your own canoe!!" That still remains true, but now I add as advice to myself and others, is that it takes guts,determination, self belief and above all Passion to follow a Dream, and with all that anything is Possible.
