Cloning and Framing of a Leopard Gecko

by dcg

This photo of Dew-Hicky Mabob started with a very lucky shot. I had done a photo shoot with Dew-Hicky and got a few nice shots. I was holding him in my left hand and picked up my camera in my right hand. It was already set to Macro and Auto focus. Right before I put him back in his terrarium I tried for one more shot. Put Photo # 1 here I took the last photo about 4 inches away from his head with no flash.

The ceiling light was on and directly to my left side. He started squirming to get out of my hand, thus the looking down angle. I pressed the shutter then put him back in his home. I looked at the photo and was amazed at the detail, especially in the eye. My thumb was on his chest and I knew before I entered the photo that my thumb would need to disappear. I pulled up the photo of Dew-Hicky on my photo editing software and cropped close to his head and upper shoulder. Put Photo # 2 here Next I used the magic lasso tool to outline my thumb.

Once that was done I used the clone tool to remove my thumb. I have found that if I am trying to clone a large area it is good to use a large setting for the clone tool but since what was showing of his chest was so small I had to go to that size. The cloning took a while.

I enlarged the view so that when I did clone my thumb out I would get the scales lined up correctly. I also lengthened the fold at his armpit just a little. Put Photo # 3 here when I was happy with the cloning job I decided to work on a frame.

I usually do not add frames but I thought it would be nice for this one. There is hopefully an easier way to accomplish what I had done for the frame but I didn't know how. Seems I always take the hard way to do photo editing and then learn later how to do the same thing easier. Oh well, I clicked on Image, and then grow canvas. I extended the canvas all the way around by 6 pixels in black. Then repeated the process again by 2 pixels in white, followed again with 1 pixel again in black. Next I continued the process with 12 pixels in white and lastly 6 pixels in black. This next part was the trickiest part for me.

I used the magic wand to select the largest area in white (12 pixels all the way around) that I had just finished creating. I used clone again very close to the first (inside) black frame and pasted it on the area selected. I went all the way around and was very pleased.

At the next contest I entered the finished product. I was hoping to get an honorable mention in the contest and was very surprised to have won!
