Night Photography Techniques

Firstly I'd like to thank all the people who voted my photo as the winner for this month as it is the first time i have ever entered a photo in a contest anywhere and this is very encouraging. I took the original shot walking with a friend following a regular friday night coffee. Autumn in Melbourne is perfect for night photgraphy as the office lights are all on and the sky darkens just at the right time. I had no tripod so used the wall as a prop for the camera. I'd like to say that night photography has a whole new meaning now we have digital because the camera doesnt suffer the limitations of film when having long exposures. When I take night shots I actually use the meter ring in the camera and try and get the camera to focus on infinity on a building so that the shot remains sharp. I will always try and use f/8 as the aperture and leave the camera on manual mode so that I read the exposure. I will then bracket the shot, taking shots from 2 stops under to 2 stops over by changing the shutter speed and leaving the aperture at f/8.
