What makes the voting on Photos-of-the-year.com so unique? Why is it performed in this way, (wouldn't averaging out the votes be better)? This is a question I have been asked many times. I am going to try to put into words what makes this site's voting system so special.
The most important parts of POTY: The Mission and Vision: (and how they relate to voting). POTY is a free and open site, there is no charge to take part and learn, share and receive the value of an open site.
Using "Popular vote" shows the photos that are selected by both quality and popularity, there may be higher average rated photos, but the way this is set up the photos that win directly relate to the photos that would sell more often, in other words the voting here on POTY reflects closely the purchasing practices of the Art World.
That means as a winner, you may not have the most technically perfect photo, but more people would buy your photo than the others in the contest.
I would rather have a photo that sells more often, than one that is technically perfect that collects dust.
The voting is handled by the majority of members. Members from all walks of life and from all over the world, with one common interest ( they love photography ). What does that mean to you?
By having many members from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds you (as an artist) get a real life critique of your work that reflects the tastes of the masses. If your photo wins a contest it means it would be widely accepted world wide, but more than that, you don't have to make winner or 2nd, 3rd, as long as your photos are making it to the fore front of the contests, that says that you are consistently producing good sellable work.
The photos that are coming to the front pages of the completed contests, give all artists here a real vision of what is popular and accepted world wide. This can be a great gage of the art world as to what type of photos you should be producing for sale.
By voting in this manner, you can gain a realistic vision of the art world as a whole world wide, and in real time. I hope you find the value of this site and use it to your financial advantage.
