Photographing Flamingo

My son gave me the idea for the photo titled Reflections in Pink. He had taken a photo of two Flamingos and pasted them on a dark background.

I took this at the Adelaide Zoo. The Flamingo Pond has been in the same spot for around 100 years. There is a wall at the back which has waterfall suppling water to the pond. There is a huge tree to the left hand side. I have took several photos in different light conditions before I settled for the late afternoon where the tree and wall make it quite dark but I can still get a good reflection on the ponds surface. I took some shots at noon but it was too bright for the shot to work. I took some on an overcast day but these were not much good as well.

My current camera has only got 3x optical zoom so that was a draw back, especially with this shot due to the flamingo being nearly at the furthest point in the pond from where I took the photo. I used my burst feature to get the shot I was after. They tend to be quite quick when putting their bills in the water. As most photographers will know animals do their own thing without much consideration to us photographers. I wanted to catch it with its Bill just in the water. After many attempts I finally got one I was happy with.

I cropped the shot using the Rule Of thirds, I cloned out the small Waterfall and some light spots on the wall as well as some feathers floating on the waters surface. I then darkened the photo using the Curves Tool in Photoshop. I then used the Sharpen edge Tool in Photoshop. I played with the contrast a bit as well. I am planning to get a Digital SLR and a 70mm to 300mm lens so if all goes well I will try for another shot which should be clearer. I feel I can improve on this photo, and I must thank my son for the idea..
