I have been shooting with the Canon 10D for the last year. Although I think it is a marvelous camera, I had a few complaints. My main complaint was that it was always telling me "busy" when I really wanted to get a shot. I sat through three football plays before the buffer cleared so that I could change a memory card.
That's when my other half agreed that it was time for a new camera. He could not relate in terms of missed animal shots, but missed football shots, he understood.
I shoot a lot of animal photography and for that reason, I am in love with the magnification factor of the Canon 10D and many other Digital SLR's. Besides the price, the fact that I would loose 150mm to 300 mm, respectively, of telephoto zoom on my long lens, the Canon Mark II or 1D were not overly appealing.
Canon seems to have solved my complaints. I just received the new Canon 20D, and I worked hard putting it through it's paces yesterday.I shoot mostly in the raw format. That left me 8 shots before I filled the buffer on the 10D. Then, it seemed like it took forever to clear enough that I could take another shot.
Yesterday, I was able to take 13 shots before the 20D even began to slow down. Then, just about as fast as I could focus, I was able to take another 10 shots before the buffer even began to cough and sputter. When it did hesitate, it took only a fraction of a second to clear for the next shot. I was ecstatic at how fast the buffer cleared so that I could change memory cards.
When I first started shooting, the shutter release sounded a little like rapid gunfire, but as the day wore on, the shutter quieted down. Hopefully, it will gradually get much quieter.
I ordered the camera with the new 17-85 mm lens with stabilizer.
The jury is still out on the lens. I am not thrilled with the fact that it only fits the Rebel and the 20D. I am not able to use any of my extension tubes or teleconvertors.
Just a quick note: Adobe CS was written before the Canon 20D was released so it will not read the raw files from the 20D until you download an updated plug-in from Adobe.com.
The plug-in you are searching for is the 2.3 update. It can be found here. Follow the directions for removal of the old plug-in and add the new update and you are good to go.
If you shoot in raw, but Microsoft Windows will not show you the thumbnails, you can download this free program. The program seamlessly integrates RAW files support into Windows and allows preview RAW images as thumbnails or in full screen viewer, execute slideshow, view histogram ....
Check your firmware update: Make sure it is 1.05. If not, download the latest update from Canon. The original firmware had a bug in it, often causing the camera to lock up with "error 99". Be sure and read the directions for the update. It's easy and effective, if you follow directions.
In conclusion, so far I am very happy that I made the decision to purchase the Canon 20D. I will let you know in a future update if I decided to keep or return the 17-85 mm lens.
