I am currently a student in advanced photography at BSU in Idaho. I have been very interested in macro photography and was assigned two photographers to emulate at the beginning of this semester just to get a start.

One of my photographers was Catherine Chalmers who is well known for her "Food Chain" series. In this series she examines and documents the relationships in the food chain of insects and small animals. Tomato worms eat tomatoes, a praying mantis eats the worms, a toad eats the praying mantis and the cycle begins again with other creatures. I acquired a praying mantis near the end of summer and so began my emulation of the Food Chain.
The first day I had her I didn't have anything for her to eat so I knocked a big house fly silly with a newspaper, put it in her cage and viola! She snatched that fly up so fast! I carefully took her out and put her on a big piece of white paper. The fly parts started falling off as she munched on him and I just used natural light through the window as I was not prepared for this photo session. I also had a +4CU lens on, the focus was auto. I adjusted the white balance in Photoshop and this is the end result! I still have her and she has now laid six egg sacs. She eats a steady diet of crickets and I still take her out for photo sessions.
