Nikon Nikkor Lens Mini-Review

by GoldenHammer

I made an important decision in March 2002 to invest on the top professional class equipments. I started building up my system with the digital SLR camera, Nikon D1x with two and two Nikkor prime lenses.

As an amateur photographer, I intended to give initial impression to my lens collection. I would write more details on technical aspects for each lens in my collection when I have more time.

You may refer to my Digital Photography Journal for sample photos on the lenses.

AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f / 2.8G ED

This is seventh lens I got to extend my sense in ultra wide photography. The 10.5mm Nikkor is a compact and light lens with design optimized for Nikon's digital cameras.

It, should be a perfect match for my D1x, has very fast AF and produces sharp image even under poor lighting environment with extreme low shutter speed.

Very high speed lens. It comes with a front hood and accept additional rear filters.

AF Nikkor 18mm f / 2.8D

This is the fifth lens I get for wide angle scene. I use it primarily on my FM3A for real 18mm ultra wide work, see Black & White Photography in Ultra Wide Prospect, and D1x for general wide scene at a FOV of 27mm. A sharp lens from f/4 to f/8. Because of the shot focal length, it is also suitable for low light handheld work at relatively slow shutter speed. This lens gives very similar characteristic of the AF 28mm f/1.4D which introduces some noticable CA under sun light.

Very high speed but noisy AF. Excellent built quality with a plug on hood. It takes 77mm filter thread

AF Nikkor 28mm f / 1.4D

This is one of the first lens I got with my Nikon D1x and AFD 85mm f/1.4. It is very sharp lens from f/2.8 to f/5.6. Very usable wide open at f/1.4 and f2.0 which enables handheld far distance night scene shots. It effectively becomes a 42mm FOV lens which is nice for scenes photography and close portriats. Though sometime I find noticable CA distortion, it has been the lens I used most often with my D1x.

It has excellent bulit quality and takes 72mm filter thread.

Nikkor 45mm f / 2.8 P

It is the fourth prime lens I got for my D1x which fills the focal lenght between my existing 28mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4. A light and compact lens that is very sharp along all apertures from f/2.8 to f/8.0, well it is proabably the sharpness prime lens I own. It becomes a "standard" lens on my D1x which gives maximum portability and can be used for everyday shots, generall sence and 3/4 portrait.

Though it is a manual focus lens, it supports all metering modes on my D1x. It takes 52 mm thread filters, the package comes with a NC cover protection filter, cap cover and a soft bag. A very high quality lens which means simple is the best.

AF Nikkor 85mm f / 1.4D IF

This is one of the first lens I got with my Nikon D1x and AF 28mm f/1.4D. A great lens for mid distance portrait which is sharp along all aperture stops even wide open at f/1.4. The defocus background is excellent and smooth, I really appreciated the narrow DOF achieve at f/1.4 and it allows handheld work under low light condition without flash lighting.

AF performance is fast but noisy when the motor is rolling. The build quality is very good and solid. It has a 77mm filter thread and comes with a great screw-in metal lens hood.

AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f / 4D IF-ED

This is my fourth lens to fill the focal length gap between my 85mm and 300mm lenses for macro photography and mid to far distance portrait. A very sharp lens even wide open at f/4. With its weigth and focal length, I found it is not fast enough for handheld work. I always have it on tripod for macro work and would only handheld for portrait shots.

Excellent build quality and compact lens. It accepts 72mm front thread filter and Nikon also provides a very nice metal hood.

AF-S Nikkor 300mm f / 4D IF-ED

This is the third prime lens I got for my D1x. I used it for shooting indoor fashion show and birds. It can be used for shooting flowers just work like a macro lens. Excellent sharpness lens in f/5.6 and f/8, and still very nice wide open at f/4. It is probably the largest lens that can be still usable with handheld.

A quiet AFS lens, but AF seems a bit slow to me. Very good build quality. It takes 77mm front thread filter with a built-in hood which works pretty nice.
